Staying Current

I've never been the best about staying on top of current events. At least not since I left the nest where morning and evening news were a regular part of my diet. And after I had my first child, my mind started to bend toward all things family which left little room for the national or the global. Then there are the little (mostly materialistic) obsessions that pop in and out of my thoughts - from instant Polaroid cameras, to baby strollers and finding the best post-baby swimsuit. Good thing these materialistic obsessions are tempered by my frugal, painfully slow trigger finger.

Now that I'm done having babies. (Well, there is that whole adoption thing we're investigating.) I've decided that I really need to get back on the ball and do more than skim the headlines - I need to read the stories. Not just for the sake of keeping up with current events, but to be a good citizen, to learn about the lives of others and to be a better wife and mother.

So here are a few articles I found interesting today.

A Lifetime of Care - Part 1: A past enveloped in love, a future that's uncertain
A Lifetime of Care - Part 2: Aging father agonizes over fate of his son
These articles highlight the lives of families with aging children who have disabilities that require a high degree of care. The parents of these children are reaching advanced age and have to decide the future care of their children.

Changing economic conditions destabilize world food supply
A good synopsis of the condition of the food supply around the world. If you want an analysis of the causes, you'll have to read something else.

Sorry, Seattle - I've found somewhere else.
John Moe of our beloved KUOW has found a new home, and he writes a break-up letter to Seattle.

Enjoy.

Using ethanol for fuel is just plain alcohol abuse.

Wow... that John Moe piece was hilarious - all the cliches and relationship breakup lines were funny to the hilt!
