Merry Christmas!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season.

2007 Christmas E-card

Luke 2:8-14 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"

The Phone I Love

I'm not a gadget girl. I'm not like my brother who (literally) runs around a cell phone store like a little kid pushing all the buttons on the latest multi-purpose communication device. Most of my cell phone upgrades have been due to hand-me-downs from Chainwhip or out of necessity because of carrier changes. My last switch was out of privilege because Chainwhip works for "The New AT&T". This was quite a while ago, but in addition to discussing potential devices with Chainwhip, I consulted with my cell phone enthusiast brother who advised me to get the Sony Ericsson W810i.

And I have to say, that though I've always been satisfied with my previous phones (once they became small enough to fit into a pocket), this one I love - in that materialistic conditional way. Why? Because it takes decent photos.

Did you know that virtually all the photos I post on this, the dumplings blog, and my flickr are all taken by this little cell phone? I'm so lazy I don't even try to carry a digital camera... I just whip out my phone.

These photos don't impress, but they do a heck of a job at simple documentation. The perfect marriage of practicality, portability and usability. Hurrah for my little black W810i... you've helped preserve memories for years to come.

(By the way, you can see other people's W810i photos here on Flickr. They can be quite amazing.)

And I think some of you may not know I have another blog called King Kong Dumplings where I feature this little toddler... and my cats... but those cats will be moving on to a new home sometime soon.

Coffee & Jesus

I've loved coffee since I was 9 years old - thanks to my father, Taiwan and Mr. Brown.

In fact, Mr. Brown was my standard for coffee until I reached high school. Then I discovered the joys of the french roast at La Madeline... and later in college the bottomless coffee cup at places like Kerby Lane Cafe and Einstein's Bagels.

Then I took an internship at Boeing in Seattle and discovered the latte. Not just any latte mind you, Starbucks' mocha valencia latte.

I didn't indulge much in this drink because technically I was still a poor college student, but my "friend" Chainwhip at the time introduced me to the wonders of the french press coffee - dark, bold and oily coffee. Wonderful with condensed milk.

But I got tired of french press coffee because sometimes it was tricky to get a decent grind out of a cheap blade coffee grinder, and pre-ground coffee was too fine for a french press. I also often over boiled the water so my coffee became bitter and undrinkable. Or I didn't empty my french press fast enough and the subsequent cups were bitter and undrinkable. More recently I only use my french press for tea.

I did dabble a bit in homemade drip coffee when my roomies had a coffeemaker and in more frequent uses of my Vietnamese coffee contraption.

But neither were satisfactory. I had officially become a coffee snob.

In the last year or so I've been contemplating buying another coffee contraption - maybe stovetop "espresso"? Or better yet a stovetop cappuccino maker that also froths your milk.

But I never pulled the trigger because I read that the coffee from these things taste more like extra strong drip, something you can do with your french press or Vietnamese drip - both of which I already owned. So I played with the idea of buying a full blown espresso machine. Why not? Oh wait, I'm cheap and these things are expensive.

Then I saw that Costco.com was selling the SAECO Aroma for $189.99.

I thought about it. I went back to look at it multiple times. I looked like a good deal. The machine got good reviews. I hemmed and I hawed and returned to the site one day to find this...

Then of course I found out that it really was a steal deal. That slow cheap trigger finger lost out. I decided to do some real research, with the help of Chainwhip, and found a decent deal through Starbucks, 20% off all merchandise. (Today is the last day for this sale!) Their starter machine is the SAECO Via Venezia which is incredibly similar to the Aroma.

We took a visit to a Starbucks in downtown Seattle yesterday to take a look at the machine and discovered that it was marked down $30. I asked the salesperson if the 20% off was in addition to the marked discount, she checked the price at the register, and by golly it was! This swanky little espresso machine, priced originally at $280, was on sale for $199.

I bought it as a gift to me for Christmas.

So last night I pulled 3 shots. The first was terrible, the second was divine, and the third was almost as terrible as the first - and it was fun! Merry Coffee to me!

Oh wait, I forgot to mention that Chainwhip passed on to me the Starbucks giftcard he received from his director. It had $10 on it, so my total for the espresso machine was only $189... which is the same price the SAECO Aroma was selling for at Costco.com. Thank you Jesus! And Happy Birthday to you too. You're the only person I know who gives but receives nothing on his birthday.

An IKEA Holiday

I'm planning a trek to IKEA to buy some furniture we need for the new house and to shop around because shopping (and eating) at IKEA is fun! And apparently, the whole I-love-to-eat-at-IKEA thing is in the blood because the only people I know who like to eat at IKEA as much as I do are my brother and my cousin Anne.

The only issue with my trek to IKEA is that I'll be alone. Not that I mind going to IKEA by myself, but there might be a problem with a 28 week pregnant woman moving large boxes of furniture into her cart and into her car. So if a more physically capable person would like to join me on Friday, December 21st for an IKEA adventure, please let me know. You can even partake in my 15% off everything discount... and maybe I'll even pay for your IKEA dinner! If we're one of the first 200 people between 4-8pm, then we get free dinner and gift bags!

AND they'll be serving lutefisk! Bonus if you love the stuff like Chainwhip.

IKEA anyone? anyone?

Snow & Pomegranate

It snowed last weekend. Actually, it snowed today too but it only stuck around for an hour or so. Here are some of the photos of our winter wonderland. (More Xiaozhuzhu photos will be posted on the dumplings site.)

Mystery berries in our yard...
Forgotten snow photo
Does anyone know what this bush is? It's really all berries this time of year.

We also happened to schedule a family photo shoot with our friend Siang for that day, so we have some super amazing snow photos of the entire family!

The next morning we braved the cold weather for brunch out with WallyTarr. I did a little search on Chowhound where someone recommended Pomegranate, associated with a well know caterer in the area. I thought I'd give it a try.

When we first drove up to Pomegranate, we were completely underwhelmed. I have never been so underwhelmed by the exterior of a restaurant before. The bistro and catering business is located in a flattop very plain-Jane office building with little indication of any great culinary business on the inside. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the blaise exterior, so here's a stolen one from Yelp.

Then because the outside was so unimpressive, I was blown away by the very nice, warm bistro interior. Gigantic windows look into the very large and clean catering kitchen, and from our table, we could see the bistro kitchen and fire oven.

And the menu proved to be a challenge because it was so interesting. I really wanted to try their savannah hot puffs rolled in cinnamon sugar with warm vanilla bean sauce and whipped cream, so I got the hempler's bacon, eggs, white cheddar and tomato sandwich to accompany my hot puffs.

Breakfast sandiwch and amazing donuts

WallyTarr got the pom croque madame with proscuitto, gruyere cheese, and frisee on artisan ciabatta toast.

And hungry Chainwhip not only ordered a huge firebread breakfast with spinach, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, white chedder and fresh basil, but he couldn't resist the stack of candied ginger lemon oatcakes & organic maple syrup.

Yes, that firebread is as wide as his body. Don't worry though, he didn't eat it all. He left maybe a 2"x2" square of firebread and we all split the oatcakes. They were amazing, but not as amazing as my hot puffs.

Pomegranate Bistro is a great find in my opinion. The prices are reasonable and the food is fantastic. We'll have to return for another meal.

Rah Rah Christmas Tree

Our little fiber optic tree is up! I thought long and hard about buying a big artificial tree.. then maybe going down to Ikea for their Rent-a-Tree thing (real tree, $10 deposit).. or buying a real one somewhere else. But after a weekend of being kinda snowed in and going into work on Sunday, I decided not to bother and put up what we have.

Our little christmas tree is up!

Some of you may remember the fiasco I endured surrounding the purchase of this tree. It makes me wonder why I've purchased more than one thing at Overstock.com. And to boot, this year I noticed that the tree is really crooked. The photo doesn't show it much, but maybe because I didn't place this tree in the corner this year, it seems much more noticeable. I also leveled it a bit with some cardboard.

Also, to add to my christmas tree bah-humbug, the darn thing has such a lightweight base that it topples over way too easily. I tried to anchor the tree with a couple of heavier ornaments, and I propped one thin-ish ornament under the base to act as a fourth leg. Why they made a cylindrical base with only three legs baffles me. They effectively reduced their base size.

Well, merry christmas decorating. Maybe next year we'll get a real tree.
